SEMINAR 10F102

ART CONSULTING SEMINARS
Advanced Florida Building Code (Egress Flow)
Two contact hours (CEH’s, PDH’s)
AIA Course Number 10F102 (2 Learning Units)
Florida Building Commission Advanced Course Number
408.0

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Seminar 10F102 will look at the basis for egress requirements in
the Florida Building Code. The seminar is designed to help enhance one’s intuitive sense as to
how much space is needed for building occupants, both when stationary and when mobile. Research data will be used to illustrate many of the underlying principles of good means of
egress design. Seminar 10F102 also looks some at individuals with disabilities, in particular, how their mobility affects the egress process. Exercises will be used to enhance the understanding of discussed concepts. The core document for the seminar will be the 2007 Florida Building Code
with 2009 revisions. Course notes will be provided at the seminar. Seminar 10F102 is approved
by the Florida Building Commission as an Advanced Florida Building Code seminar.

GOALS: Seminar 10F102 is designed to help ensure that participants:

   1. Understand from exercises and discussion how occupant density affects the efficiency and
       the safety of exiting;

   2. Understand from discussion that when occupants exit together, their flow is influenced by
       many variables;

   3. Recognize from discussion and data in the course handout material that individuals with
       disabilities significantly influence exit flow; and

   4. Recognize from discussion and handout materials that building codes respond directly to the
       concerns of occupant density and flow.

PRESENTATION AND EVALUATION: Seminar 10F102 is an instructor led course, using a lecture, and power point slide presentation enhanced with on-screen drawing. The participants
are encouraged to ask questions and to contribute to discussion during the seminar. They are
given time at the end of the seminar for more questions. The participants’ progress is evaluated throughout the seminar by the comments made and the questions asked. The seminar is
evaluated through the use of forms distributed to the seminar participants after the seminar is complete.

WHAT TO BRING? Each participant should bring a 2007 Florida Building Code (FBC) with 2009 Supplement, a calculator, a writing instrument, and an AIA number (if the participant is a member of the AIA). A 2006 International Building Code (IBC) and the Americans with Disabilities Act Standards for Accessible Design (ADAAG) can be used, though the course notes will refer to sections in the 2007 FBC. If you are trying to travel "light", you will be able to
follow along with chapters 10 and 11 of the FBC.
